For  the  preparation of nutrition profiles in each  state,  all  the blocks of each district are to covered. From each block  in   Sikkim  and North Eastern states, two villages, one upto a population of  500 and another  of above  500  were  selected  by  using   probability proportional  to size (PPS) sampling. In  Goa  and  the  two  Union Territories,  however, the division was for population of below 1000  and above 1000.  In each selected village, 20 households were selected by using the cluster sampling method were the village is divided into different  areas  or clusters of houses and five such clusters were selected  randomly, one among them being from SC/ST  category, where present. From  selected clusters the required number  of  contiguous households with random start were surveyed.

In addition to rural sample, an urban  sample of 25 percent was also covered in  each  district. For this, district  headquarters  and  a requisite number of randomly selected ward or wards,  20 contiguous households with random start were  surveyed. The fieldwork was undertaken  by local field functionaries  recruited  with  the  assistance  of  State Government Departments  of  Social  Welfare/Health. The  PFNDAI  staff and  Food  and Nutrition  Board  officials were involved in the training of the local field staff.
